  • Story

After 10 years of reconstruction works, the national cultural monument – Renaissance-Baroque castle in Halič opened its gates in 2016. After a thorough and sensitive reconstruction the decaying castle changed into an exceptional “Castle hotel Galicia Nueva”. The historical jewel of Novohrad County was reconstructed thanks to the company IMET a.s. that has been producing and selling rolling bearings and spare parts for metallurgy industry and heavy engineering for more than 20 years.

The reconstruction was an exquisite step and an attempt to interconnect the presence with the past. Life is not only about the presence, it is about the perception of values and message of our ancestors. It is important to respect and esteem the work of those, who were here before us, and to mediate such message to future generations. And so the aristocratic castle was transformed into a hotel with a restaurant for everybody who comes to enjoy a cup of coffee or a dinner, or perhaps to walk in the beautiful forest park. For everybody who spends unforgettable moments in the hotel and experiences the “genius loci” and the spirit of those, who were here before.

Castle hotel Galicia Nueva, meaning New Halič, has been offering its services from June 2016, when the first guests arrived to the reconstructed monument to use the gastronomic services of the castle restaurant Rosalia, café Arcadia and Wine bar Nicolaus. Beautiful hotel premises welcome guests from September 2016.

The hotel is designed for clients looking for a slightly active relaxation without any disturbing impacts of mass tourism. 50 suites and rooms with capacity of 108 beds offering above standard accommodation and equipped with various historical and art styles await the guests. The overall capacity, including extra beds, is 138 people. The hotel premises are ideal for organisation of congresses, work meetings, workshops, wedding receptions, dance balls or concerts. Other diverse activities are offered by restaurant, wine bar with private rooms, library or terrace that also offers a beautiful view of the wide surroundings of Halič. Guests can experience perfect relaxation in exclusive premises of the wellness centre with a pool, saunas, massages and a whirlpool. Guests can also enjoy the beauty and the calmness of the surrounding nature in a French park or in a forest park with a small pond.

The castle reconstruction itself and its transformation into a luxurious historical hotel brought job vacancies to the locals and contributed to the overall development of Novohrad region. Many firms from near and far participated in reconstruction works that lasted for ten years. Today the castle hotel employs more than 50 people. In the future the hotel will belong to tourist attractions of Novohrad and it will keep supporting the development of the region.

  • History

The origins of Halič Castle date back to the 12th century. The first written record of the castle dates from 1386, when Queen Mary of Hungary permitted local aristocrat Stephen Lossonczy to build a stone castle at this site. The family owned the castle until the 16th century when the residence fell into the hands of the Forgách Family, one of the oldest noble dynasties in Hungary. The castle belonged to the Forgách from 1554 to 1948 and the family still visits it regularly today.

It has over history experienced a wave of reversals caused by uprisings, wars and all sorts of rebellions that eventually left it in ruins. The ruins of the castle started to rise from the ashes in 1762, when it was redesigned by an architect named Meyerhoffer. In 1897 a new stage began in the life of Halič Castle. It was in that year that Franz Wenckheim had the entire building reconstructed in honor of his wife from the legendary Forgách Family. The castle also has a French park whose rose garden started to be planted in 1820.

Two world wars, the onset of Communism in Czechoslovakia in 1948 and the activities of the collective farm established on the castle grounds during socialism did not benefit the castle in any way. Starting in the 1960s, the Institute of Social Care confined mentally handicapped youth of Lučenec at the castle. It had undergone reconstruction for this purpose between 1952 and 1964, significantly changing the original structure of the object.

Since 1993 the castle was abandoned and left without an owner, it started to deteriorate. Nature and vandals began to take a toll on the castle. Finally in 2005, the castle was privatized and with a new appearance it is today writing an attractive and interesting chapter in its modern history.
