History
The ARCADIA hotel building was built in the second half of the 12th century and is a national cultural monument registered in the Central List of Monument Fund. Františkánska street, on which the hotel building is located, was originally a castle street, initially built on only one side, namely the building of the Franciscan church with the chapel of St. John the Evangelist, with a garden and a monastery.
From the first third of the 15th century, town houses stood on the northern part of the side of the street towards the castle wall. The space in front of today’s Loreto chapel was used for the location of various shops, as the street widened here. The workshops of cutters, coopers and stonemasons stood here.
Examples of Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist blacksmith works have been preserved in the current building. On the plot, archeological research found documents of a settlement from the Lateny period and also objects from the 12th-13th centuries. century
At the time of the Crusades, in the 12th century, the house is mentioned in connection with the German Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who allegedly spent the night here at the head of the 3rd Crusade heading to Constantinople. In historical sources, we also find a mention of the name of the building Hussite House. Some authors interpret the fact that there is a chalice with a host in the courtyard in the Renaissance arcade, so that the cellar spaces were a place for secret meetings of the followers of the Hussites, who wanted to take over the leadership of the city in 1432 and surrender Bratislava to the Hussites.
In the past, the hotel served as a residential burgher’s house and is situated in the northern part of Bratislava’s historic core, and part of the city’s fortifications is included in its layout and stands on two medieval plots. During the Renaissance, an arcaded courtyard with a staircase was built, which, due to its artistic and historical qualities, is one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in Slovakia. A fragment of a sgraffito crown molding was uncovered on the second floor. The Renaissance vault in the large room on the ground floor is decorated with baroque stucco ornaments. In the 18th century, the building underwent two significant modifications – addition of courtyard arcades and II. floor. After the removal of the city walls after 1775, the entire back tract was built and rebuilt. New basement staircases are being created and courtyard facades are getting their final shape. The building has a new classicist facade.
The burgher’s house on Františkánská Street is one of the outstanding buildings of the city due to its architecture. In its material and spatial composition, you can follow the historical development of construction in the city, the change of artistic and aesthetic opinions of individual stylistic periods. No less significant is the fact that its back tract forms the rest of the wall of the medieval city fortification.
